CVS - Garnier Fructis Shampoo, Conditioner or Styler

I am personally not a huge fan of Garnier even though I know it is relatively popular among females. I can remember trying Garnier when it very first came out as it was free after rebate at one of the drugstores. Initially, I was very disappointed as I felt like the product left my hair with a form of split-end damage, much like Pantene also does to my hair. Yet, a lot of my peers kept clamoring about how much they liked Garnier Fructis. Nonetheless, as a result of my first experience with Garnier, I never tried the brand again until more recently when a friend brought me a bottle of Garnier as a gift. I can recall really hoping to receive Herbal Essence. After all, Herbal Essence has an even longer record of being favored among women. Plus, Herbal Essence is the brand I used a lot in my high school years, but have switched away from due to budget constraints. But, the store didn't have a shampoo and conditioner in the Herbal Essence brand, so instead I got Length & Strength Garnier. After using the product, I again felt Garnier left my hair with the same type of damage, but at the same time I felt that it did actually aid my hair in growing a little bit longer. Since I remain confused by this paradoxical phenomenon, I am willing to give Garnier another try since it is after all free. I just hope it works since although I no longer desire to grow my hair out for Locks of Love, I would like it to continue to grow a few more inches like it was in the old days. However, for some unknown reason, I feel like my hair will no longer grow past a certain point. Can Coke stunt hair growth too?

Safeway - Lucerne Shredded Cheese

Safeway has Lucerne Shredded Cheese 32 oz on sale for $5.99 thru Tuesday, November 11, 2008.

Cheese is one of those products that economists always like to analyze. After all, somewhere near Denver there is reportedly a cave full of surplus cheese that has been detained so as to not shift dairy market prices. (Seriously, I am not trying to be weird. I learned about this cheese cave my freshman year in Introduction to Food and Resource Economics.) Yet, there are thousands of non-cheese purchasing people across the country that could benefit from the calcium and nutrition of the cheese. But, perhaps a full debate of the intricacies of cheese economics is best saved for another day. Nonetheless, I do desire to share my own personal micro-level reflection on cheese economics.

For the past decade or so I have never even bothered to walk down the cheese aisle as I had no interest in buying cheese. For the most part, cheese hadn't been part of my meals growing up. I can vaguely recall cheese being served in meals while I was in elementary school, but during in my middle school years I likely banned it from my diet for fat content reasons. Then in college I began to be introduced to other people's eating habits and realized that cheese brought life to numerous simple meals such as baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, salads and chili. Suddenly, I started to develop a tolerance for small quantities of cheese and as this tolerance increased I decided that shredded cheese could be part of my diet to aid me in keeping my new year's resolution of meeting my daily calcium requirements. (After all, I had run out of calcium supplements that I gotten for free from drugstores.)

At the same time, the price of cheese remained a concern. In my shopping adventures, I noted that the typical 8 oz bag of cheese sells for an average of $2.50 and that this price doesn't fit well into my budget. But, then reflecting on past debates about whether it is cheaper to buy shredded cheese or shred your own, I knew that larger bags are generally the best way to go and spotted a 32 oz bag for $4.99. It doesn't take an advanced mathematician to quickly realize that the 8 cup bag of cheese is a better value than the 2 cup bag of shredded cheese as to get the same amount of cheese in 8 oz increments would cost $10.00 instead of $4.99. It is easy to see how the difference in price multiplied by any length of time can result in either a huge savings or substantial added cost. I could regularly find the large bag of cheese on sale at this price. However, then I moved across the country to an urban area and I had to learn supermarket prices all over again. Luckily, Safeway had a comparable brand of cheese at the same price. But, then I moved across town away from a Safeway. For a couple of months, I had a hard time finding cheese that I could afford. None of the competing stores had cheese anywhere near the same price, so I went thru cheese withdraws. I ate plain salads and potatoes, longing for some cheese. Every time I would get extra money for groceries, I would think great this is cheese money. Then I moved back to the rural area that first got me hooked on cheese. Initially, I thought my cheese famine days would be over as I could go back to the same store and buy the cheese at the same price. Wrong-o. I soon discovered that price of my cheese had been hiked signifcantly to a point where there was nearly no discount in buying the large bag. I couldn't believe it. The best price I have ever seen cheese at since last fall is $5.99 for 32 oz at Safeway and while common this price isn't nearly as regular as it used to be as well as periodically Walgreens has Deerfield Cheese on sale for $1.50.

CVS - Free Listerine Cool Agent Blue Tinting Rinse

Please note this product is a tinting rinse made by Listerine. It is not a Listerine fluoride rinse. This product tints teeth a blue color and then you brush until the blue color is gone. It is designed to help people, primarily kids, make sure they fully brush their mouth fully. Although I have not tried this exact product, I tried another brand of this type of product and found the concept of a blue tint to be useless. I do, however, recommend Listerine Smart Rinse. I like the fact that Smart Rinse is a fluoride rinse that tints food particles and bacteria, but that is another product all together. This deal is only for Listerine Cool Agent Blue Tinting Rinse, but maybe someday soon there will be a deal on Listerine Smart Rinse.

For the past year, I have using primarily Softsoap Body Wash as I amassed quite a bit for free from CVS. For the first half of this time, I used the Pure Cashmere variety then later I switched to the Spa Radiant variety. In terms of the Pure Cashmere variety, I didn’t appreciate the residue the Pure Cashmere line left on my skin. Although the residue was probably intended to benefit my skin, it became more of a gunk that made me uncomfortable as well as collected sweat and dead skin cells. Thus, I found myself exerting extra effort to wash my body after washing with the body wash. In terms of the Spa Radiant line, I for the most part, have enjoyed this product and the residue problem is not as significant. Nonetheless, I am eager to try a different brand to see if I can find a product that is more appropriate for my skin type, lifestyle and climate location.

Bloom - Free Fresh Express Salad

This is a triple coupon deal valid thru Sunday, November 9, 2008.

The Bloom ad features Fresh Express Salads as on sale buy 1, get 1 free for the following varieties: Green & Crisp, Lettuce Trio, Romaine or Double Carrots. The ad also indicates a price of $3.29 w/o Breeze Card. Yet, the ad fails to explicitly specific the sale price associated with the buy 1, get 1 free offer. At the same time, the sale signs in front of the salads promote the salads as $1.67 per bag. Yet, the registers processed the salads at $1.64. At first, I was very upset that my salads did not ring up as 2 for $1.67, but then I realized that I was getting the equivalent of buy 1, get 1 free at $3.29 a bag and that with my tripled coupons both of my salads were free with overage. Thus, while I am displeased by the inconsistent pricing, I'll refrain from asking the manager about this problem. Plus, technically the coupon features the Tender Leaf Blend and I didn't want to get into a scuffle about the semantics of the coupon especially after the customer service representatives had already been rude to me.

CVS - Coke Products

CVS has 12 packs of Coke products on sale for $4/12. When you buy 4 you also get $3.00 in Extracare Bucks. Thus, it's like paying $2.25 per 12-pack after ExtraCare Bucks.

I personally have a firm $3.00 per 12-pack spending limit. I will not purchase a 12-pack at a price above this threshold and honestly I prefer it to be a maximum of $2.99 rather than $3.00. For some reason that extra penny makes me cringe even though it is technically within my personal limit.

It used to be very common to regularly find 12-packs at $2.00 and occasionally even $1.75, but over the past several years I have been alarmed at the prices I have seen for 12-packs all across the country. At first I thought it was just a west coast and urban-city occurrence, but I have frequently seen 12-packs priced in the high $4.00 to $6.00 range in a variety of geographic locations and retail establishments. (Soda at this price is absurb and is the point where my consumption will decrease signifcantly or cease completely.)

Then for a period of time I noticed that I could frequently find Coke products in my price range, but the store sale would have stipulations requiring that multiple 12-packs be purchased in the same transaction in order to get an acceptable price. Since I do not have a car or means to carry mutiple 12-packs I became agitated with these type of buy more and save sales.

While this ExtraCare Bucks reward does still require the purchase of multiple 12-packs, the great thing about this CVS ExtraCare Bucks reward is that all the 12-packs do not need to be purchased at the same time, just within the same week. Thus, you can buy and haul away one 12-pack at a time until you get to four 12-packs. Plus, even if you didn't purchase four 12-packs to get the ExtraCare Bucks, the sale price is still an acceptable price on its own.

Sweepstakes - Snail Sweeps Website

Snail mail sweepstakes are not exactly the most economical type of sweepstakes to enter as they inherently require costs associated with postage stamps, but I found myself with a massive pile of envelopes left over from a previous job. When they changed their stationary I couldn't stand to see all the envelopes dumped into the trash, so I grabbed some to use to mail rebates etc. Then one day I decided I wanted to get rid of them all and decided that entering snail mail sweepstakes would be a good way to put the envelopes use since I also had a stack of index cards to us. There are many funky sweepstakes website, but I found SnailSweeps.com to be the most pleasant to visit. One snail mail sweepstakes is posted a day on this website. I don't actually know if Heavenly Father would ever allow me to win a sweepstakes. I generally feel that He might not like the chance and luck inherent in sweepstakes, but given the hard-nosed of the members of His Church and my fear of the government, I figure the only way I am going to help I need to change my life is through a sweepstakes.

Chattanooga Hot Dog Co. - Free Hot Dog - Election Day Celebration

Chattanooga area voters will get a free hot dog on Tuesday just for voting in the general election. Chattanooga Hot Dog Company, a sidewalk hot dog cart on Market Street, is offering a free Great American Hot Dog to all voters on election day.

Voters simply show their "I Voted" sticker or voter registration card and get their hot dog free. No strings attached.

Chattanooga Hot Dog Company is located on the sidewalk of Market Street at 12th Street, just south of the TVA and Cigna building. The sidewalk cart is open weekdays from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., but will remain open until 3 p.m. on Nov. 4 to serve Chattanooga voters.

If you do not live in Chattanooga, I do not recommend going on a road trip just to get a free hot dog. I just thought I would mention it for those that actually live in the area.
